About Multi Language Detection Redirect
Every visitor in their own language
Many shops have one domain per language, such as example.com/en, example.com/de and example.com/nl. But visitors, ads and links often use the plain example.com. This plugin sends those visitors straight to the domain in their own language. Visitors don't have to look for the language switcher, and you can share one address everywhere.
How it works
Open a domain of your sales channel and switch on "Redirect this domain". Every visitor of that domain is redirected to another domain of the same sales channel:
- The language switcher comes first. When a visitor chose a language in the language switcher before, they go to that language. The choice is stored for one month.
- Then the browser language. The plugin compares the languages set in the visitor's browser with the languages of your domains and picks the best match.
- Then the fallback domain. When none of the visitor's languages is available, they go to the domain marked "Use as fallback domain". Without a fallback domain, the domain of the sales channel's default language is used.
Example setup
- example.com: English, "Redirect this domain" on
- example.com/en: English, "Use as fallback domain" on
- example.com/de: German
- example.com/nl: Dutch
A visitor with a Dutch browser who opens example.com lands on example.com/nl. A visitor with a Spanish browser lands on example.com/en. When the Dutch visitor switches to German in the language switcher, their next visit of example.com opens example.com/de.
The same page, in the right language
Visitors land on the same page they opened, in the target language and with its SEO URL. A link to example.com/Shoes leads to example.com/de/Schuhe for a German visitor. Query parameters, for example from a newsletter or an ad, are kept.
Built for real shops
- Never cached: the redirect is temporary (302) and is never stored in the HTTP cache, a reverse proxy or the browser. Every visitor gets their own redirect.
- Same host first: when a sales channel has several domains for a language, the one on the same host and scheme is preferred, for example https over http.
- Only your own domains: visitors are only sent to domains of the same sales channel. Your language domains themselves are never redirected.
- Language switcher: switching languages never leads back to the redirected domain.
- Cookie consent: the language cookie is listed as "Language" under the technically required cookies.
- Subdirectories: works with Shopware installations in a subdirectory.
The Administration and storefront texts are available in English, German, Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish and Danish.
